Jana Vidya in Jhunsi
Reaching communities across the Ganga with free education, healthcare, and community development programs in one of Prayagraj's most historically rich yet educationally underserved areas.
Education & Healthcare in Jhunsi
Jhunsi lies on the eastern bank of the Ganga, directly across from the Sangam — the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Sarasvati. Despite its proximity to one of India's most visited pilgrimage sites, Jhunsi remains largely agrarian and underserved. The area is about 10 kilometres from Prayagraj city center, connected by the Shastri Bridge and local bus routes. Many families here depend on farming, fishing, and seasonal labour. Government schools exist but are under-resourced, with high teacher absenteeism and limited infrastructure.
Jana Vidya Foundation operates a teaching center, community library, medical camp programme, and community workshops in Jhunsi, Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India. The Jhunsi center serves over 100 students from farming, fishing, and daily-wage families living in the trans-Ganga area near the historic Sangam. Classes cover mathematics, science, Hindi, English, and environmental studies, with weekend workshops that connect academic concepts to the local agricultural landscape. The community library holds more than 500 books, and bi-annual medical camps have screened over 350 residents for common health issues. Jana Vidya Foundation was established in 2023 with the mission of creating impact through education. In Jhunsi, the foundation combines educational access with healthcare outreach and community workshops on digital literacy, financial awareness, and women's health, addressing the interconnected barriers that prevent families from breaking the cycle of poverty.
Jana Vidya Foundation chose Jhunsi as a service area because the trans-Ganga communities here are physically separated from the city's educational and medical infrastructure. Crossing the bridge costs time and money that most families cannot spare. By establishing a center within walking distance of the main Jhunsi settlement, near the Hanuman Mandir and the Jhunsi bus stand, we have removed the most significant barrier to access.

Healthcare is a critical need in Jhunsi. The nearest government hospital is across the river in the city, and private clinics in the area are few and expensive. Many residents delay treatment for treatable conditions simply because they cannot afford the trip. Our bi-annual medical camps bring doctors, nurses, and pharmacists directly to the community. Each camp offers general health check-ups, eye screenings, dental consultations, and a supply of basic medicines — all at no cost.
Beyond immediate care, our medical team identifies chronic conditions and connects patients with government health schemes such as Ayushman Bharat. Health awareness sessions on nutrition, hygiene, and women's reproductive health accompany each camp, ensuring that the benefits extend far beyond the day of the event. To date, our camps in Jhunsi have screened over 350 residents and facilitated more than 40 referrals to specialist care.
Community Impact
The Jhunsi community has responded to Jana Vidya Foundation's presence with remarkable enthusiasm. Parents who were initially sceptical of free programs now actively encourage neighbours to enrol their children. Local youth have volunteered as teaching assistants, and the community library has become a gathering space for study groups and reading circles. The medical camps draw residents from surrounding villages including Daraganj and Karelabagh, extending our impact beyond Jhunsi itself.
Voices from Jhunsi
“My son used to skip school because he found the lessons confusing and the classroom too crowded. After joining Jana Vidya's center near the Jhunsi bus stand, he started enjoying studies for the first time. The volunteers explain things patiently and make learning fun with experiments and stories. He now talks about becoming an engineer. For a farmer like me, hearing that is everything.”
