Medical Camps
Free health checkups, vision screening, and wellness awareness for rural communities in Prayagraj — because a healthy child is a learning child.
Why We Run Medical Camps
Education and health are inseparable. A child suffering from untreated anemia cannot concentrate in class. A student who cannot see the blackboard clearly falls behind. A family burdened by preventable illness struggles to prioritize schooling. Jana Vidya Foundation recognized early that our education mission would be incomplete without addressing the health challenges that keep children out of the classroom.
Jana Vidya Foundation has organized more than 10 free medical camps in rural and semi-urban areas of Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India, including Phaphamau, Naini, Jhunsi, and Handia. These camps provide general health checkups, vision screening, blood pressure and diabetes testing, and health awareness sessions to underserved communities. Volunteer doctors, nurses, and medical students staff each camp, serving hundreds of patients per event. Jana Vidya Foundation conducts these medical camps as part of its broader mission of impact through education, recognizing that good health is a prerequisite for effective learning. Patients requiring further treatment are referred to government hospitals and partner clinics. The camps also distribute free medicines, spectacles, and nutritional supplements to those in need, particularly children enrolled in the foundation's teaching and learning centers.
Many of the communities we work with are located far from hospitals or primary health centers. Families rely on informal healthcare providers or ignore symptoms until conditions become severe. Our medical camps bring qualified professionals directly to these communities, catching health issues early and connecting patients to the formal healthcare system when needed.
Services We Provide
Each medical camp offers a comprehensive suite of health services delivered by qualified professionals.
General Health Checkups
Qualified doctors conduct thorough physical examinations, check vital signs, and screen for common conditions such as anemia, malnutrition, respiratory infections, and skin diseases.
Vision Screening
Eye checkups using portable equipment detect refractive errors, cataracts, and other conditions early. Students with poor eyesight are provided free spectacles through our partner opticians.
Blood Pressure & Diabetes Screening
We screen adults for hypertension and diabetes — conditions that often go undetected in rural communities due to lack of regular medical access.
Health Awareness Sessions
Each camp includes interactive sessions on hygiene, nutrition, safe drinking water, sanitation, and preventive healthcare. Visual aids and local-language materials make the information accessible.
How Our Camps Work
Planning a medical camp begins weeks in advance. Our team coordinates with local community leaders, volunteer doctors, and partner organizations to select a date, secure a venue, and spread the word. We use community networks, local announcements, and our volunteers to ensure that families in need know about the camp.
On the day of the camp, patients are registered and triaged. Each person receives a health card with their vitals and findings. Doctors conduct examinations in private areas, and patients move through stations for different screenings. Free medicines are dispensed from our pharmacy station for common ailments. Patients requiring specialist care receive referral letters to government hospitals and partner clinics.
A typical camp runs from early morning to late afternoon and serves 150 to 300 patients in a single day. We maintain detailed records of each camp — patient counts, conditions diagnosed, medicines distributed, and referrals made. This data informs our planning for future camps and helps us identify health trends in the communities we serve.
Follow-up is critical. Our volunteers check in with referred patients to ensure they accessed further care. For children in our teaching centers, we maintain health records and flag recurring issues to parents and guardians.
Our Impact
Our medical camps have screened thousands of patients who had never received a formal health checkup. We have detected cases of severe anemia in children, undiagnosed diabetes in adults, and vision problems that were silently hindering students' academic performance. Early detection through our camps has led to timely treatment that might not have happened otherwise.
The health awareness sessions at each camp have a multiplier effect. Attendees share what they learn about hygiene, nutrition, and disease prevention with their families and neighbors. Over time, we see communities adopting better practices — boiling drinking water, washing hands before meals, and seeking medical attention earlier when symptoms appear.
Get Involved
Medical professionals, pharmacists, and health workers can volunteer their skills. Financial contributions help us organize more camps and reach more communities.
If you are a doctor, nurse, optometrist, or pharmacist, we invite you to volunteer at our next medical camp. Even a single day of your time can benefit hundreds of patients. Medical students are also welcome — our camps provide valuable field experience while making a real difference.
Financial donations help us procure medicines, medical supplies, and diagnostic equipment. Corporate partners can sponsor entire camps or provide medicines through CSR programs. Pharmaceutical companies can contribute by donating essential medicines and health supplements. Together, we can ensure that health is never a barrier to education in Prayagraj.
