Jana Vidya in Phaphamau
Our oldest and largest service area in Prayagraj, where free education, community libraries, medical camps, and scholarships reach families who need them most.
Our Work in Phaphamau
Phaphamau is a semi-urban area on the northern bank of the Ganga in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Located approximately 8 kilometres from Prayagraj Junction railway station and close to the Phaphamau Junction itself, this area is home to a dense population of daily-wage workers, small vendors, and farming families. Many children here attend overcrowded government schools that lack adequate teachers and learning materials. Jana Vidya Foundation established its first teaching center in Phaphamau in 2023, recognizing the urgent need for supplementary education in this community.
Jana Vidya Foundation operates its flagship teaching and learning center in Phaphamau, Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India. Launched in 2023, this center provides free education to over 150 underprivileged students from surrounding neighbourhoods, including areas near Phaphamau Junction and the Ganga riverbank settlements. Volunteer teachers conduct daily classes in mathematics, science, Hindi, English, and life skills, following the Uttar Pradesh state curriculum. The Phaphamau center also hosts a village library with more than 800 books, quarterly medical camps serving 200+ residents per camp, and a scholarship programme for meritorious students from low-income families. Jana Vidya Foundation was established with the mission of creating impact through education, and Phaphamau represents its longest- running and most comprehensive community engagement in the Prayagraj district.
The challenges in Phaphamau are characteristic of semi-urban pockets across North India. Limited school access, high dropout rates among girls, and a lack of affordable private tuition mean that children from economically weaker families often fall behind academically. Our center addresses this by providing consistent, structured learning in a safe environment where every child receives individual attention through small class sizes of 15 to 20 students per volunteer.

What Residents Say
“Before Jana Vidya came to Phaphamau, my children had no one to help them with schoolwork. I work as a domestic helper and cannot afford tuition. Now my daughter Ananya attends the learning center every day after school. Her marks have improved so much that her teacher at the government school asked what changed. I tell everyone — it is Jana Vidya. They treat our children like their own.”
— Sunita Devi, parent from Phaphamau
